Been coming to the NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Louisville,Ky since the first year in 1992,and heard today that the NSRA has renewed the contract with the Ky Fair & Exposition Center till 2020.I really can’t imagine any other City having the private or community grounds to handle so many cars,so you would think that out of 10,004 Street Rods and Street Machines it should be pretty easy to select a Shelby’s Hot Rod Roundup Pick For Friday Day Two of the Nationals…not so.I decided that I wouldn’t start my search till noon time, because early that morning I wanted to spend time visiting different vendors and friends inside the north and south wings of the Fair & Expo Center, not to mention take a look at all the new goodies by the manufacturers. After looking in the front lot I walked around to the side of the building,in the grassy areas, back by the swap meet, then back to the front and around the perimeter road of the fairgrounds, their is plenty to see and my dogs are tired…next year no more sandals while searching for Roundup Picks, this Kat is making a trip to the Shoe Carnival for some nice walking or cross trainer shoes.I had seen at least six Hot Rods that stood out,a 46 Ford Coupe,36 Ford 5 window Coupe with a Olds Rocket engine not to mention a sweet 1959 Corvette owned by Ron Sall of Zeeland,Michigan….more on this car later, but I kept coming back to David & Brenda Lurdings pale blue 1929 Ford Sedan built by Jason Graham of Jason Graham Hot Rods in Portland,Tn.
David wasn’t their but my good buddy Larry Tucker introduced me to Brenda and gave me the opportunity to share our story of Shelby and the Shelby’s Hot Rod Roundup Program and how it benefits our “Bringing Awareness to Suicide Prevention” 501c3 non-profit.Brenda & David like all of us involved in the car culture share the same love and passion,David grew up with early 70’cars and in High School spent time going to the local drag strip, dirt track and figure 8’s.We all know time goes by quick,so absorb all the memories while your in that moment.David and Brenda were married in 1979,later their son Bruce and daughter Lindsay were born so like most of us…married life, love, kids and family was the top priority. Our daughter Lindsay was married and we have a son-in-law Matt and Granddaughter Camdyn. With us now being empty nesters and time on our hands we wanted very much to re live those High School days dating and cruising in a Ole’ car,we ended up finding a 1967 GT Mustang on the way to a football game that we later went back to buy.Summer days/nights we cruised and attended car shows, summer heat was meant to enjoy in a convertible and not a hard top.Our next car was a 1969 Cougar Convertible and later added a 1955 Thunderbird,we still have this car today.

While attending shows over the years in many different cars our friends owning Hot Rods would give us a hard time about driving those late model rides.
In 2012 attending a Goodguys show we met Jason Graham and really liked the style car he was building along with the two Coupes he brought out from his shop…Jason Graham Hot Rods in Portland,Tennessee. With the show over we picked up Jason’s card,we wanted him to build us a Coupe, but was concerned about the room and later decided on a Sedan. We love this car and enjoy the Goodguys,NSRA,Cruisin the Coast and other events, scheduling our vacations around them.I will let Brenda’s words explain…”there is not a better group of people than those we meet at shows, this is a great hobby to get into at any age, especially at our age, there is so much to do,and lots of fun”.
Some would say we are just keeping up with “the Jones” in Hot Rodding,I say No…we all just want to meet more Jones,Smiths,Graham’s,Lurdings and Cain’s share fellowship, compassion and love along with Hot Rodding!
God Bless my newest friends and keep on Roddin’.
